Sip & Spin: Pottery Fun

A hands-on weekend adventure

Last weekend, I decided to try something new and signed up for one of the weekend ceramic workshops in Melbourne. I’d always admired handmade pottery, but I’d never actually worked with clay before. So, when a friend suggested we book a session together, I thought—why not? A couple of hours shaping clay with a glass of wine in hand sounded like a great way to unwind.

Getting started with clay

Walking into the studio, I was instantly hit with the earthy scent of clay and the soft hum of a spinning wheel. Our instructor, a friendly potter with years of experience, guided us through the basics:

  • Wedging the clay – to remove air bubbles and make it smooth.

  • Centering on the wheel – probably the trickiest part, but essential for shaping.

  • Shaping and trimming – turning a lump of clay into something recognisable.

It wasn’t as easy as it looked, and my first attempt at a bowl looked more like a wonky ashtray. But after a few tries, I started to get the hang of it.

Sipping and spinning

One of the best parts of the workshop was the relaxed atmosphere. With music playing in the background and everyone laughing at their wobbly creations, it felt less like a class and more like a fun night out. The wine definitely helped loosen us up—not that it made my pottery any better!

A creative takeaway

By the end of the session, I had a lopsided cup and a newfound appreciation for pottery. Whether you’re looking for a fun night with friends or searching for ceramic workshop ideas, this is definitely worth a go. Who knows? You might just discover a hidden talent!
